The self-titled A&M debut album was released in September 1987. Click to Hear "It's All Changed"
The 11-song album was produced by The Royal
Court of China after
Jimmy Page declined the job due to time constraints.
(Trivia) John Paul Jones however said he would be interested.
The band persuaded David Anderle (VP of A&R at A&M) to let them
produce one track after other meetings with producers didn't click.
The band produced It's All Changed with John Mills as engineer. The
label liked the results and gave the green light for the band to continue on.
The "blue" album, as it came to be called, was recorded at Woodland
Studios in Nashville, TN during the spring of 1987 over the course of
7 days and mixed at The Soundcastle in Los Angeles in 4 days. Mastering
took place at Sterling Sound in New York by
Ted Jensen.
(Trivia) Joe and Chris initially went to the mastering session, partied down
in the studio and came back with less than pleasing results. (Hey, it's only
rock and roll) Robert and Oscar made the second trip to master only to
discover on the plane that they were covered with chiggers from a photo
shoot in the woods a day prior. It made for one itchy ride!
The album was released in 3 formats. LP, cassette and the newly invented CD!
Album cover design was created by The RCC with photography by:
Bill Thorup (cover), Empire Studios (cover photo treatment), Patrick
McGuinn
(Joe & Chris inserts) and Rebecca Stout
(Robert & Oscar
inserts).
"It's All Changed" was the albums only single and the video was produced
by Kevin Kerslake (Nirvana).
(Trivia) The band recorded 12 songs for the album with "Black Moon"
being slated to be the b-side of the "It's All Changed" 45 rpm which
never came. I have an original lacquer recording of it somewhere and
will post it when I find it.
